Discover the joy of creating your own hand-built ceramic mug in this engaging pottery class in Portland! In this workshop, you will learn the basics of slab building, a pottery technique that does not require a wheel, just your two hands! Additionally, we'll be using craft foam to cut out stencils and add dimension and design to the clay surface.

The class begins with a slab-building demo where you’ll learn to create stencils and attach pieces of clay seamlessly. Each student will receive pre-rolled slabs of clay, along with all the tools needed to shape and decorate their mug. After sketching out ideas and creating stencils out of craft foam, students will bring their design to life by rolling the craft foam stencil into the clay slab, adding texture and dimension before constructing the mug. The rest of the session is all about building and completing each mug. In week two, students will return to the studio to paint their mugs using ceramic underglazes.

At the end of this workshop, you will walk away with an understanding of slab building, and a beautiful handmade mug ready for morning coffee! This ceramics class is a great way to get your foot in the door with a new hobby. Learn the basics and leave with a beautiful handmade item and the inspiration and motivation to pursue more! Whether you're looking for ceramics classes in Portland or you want to spend a day challenging yourself to try something new, this is an opportunity to create something from start to finish, meet new people, and indulge your creative spirit!

All mugs will be fired and glazed by the instructors outside of workshop hours; you will be notified when your items are ready for pickup.

Please note: Public dates for this class require at least 4 guests to run. In the unlikely event that we don't reach this number, we'll cancel the class; in this case we'll inform you and allow you to get a refund or reschedule, so please watch your email/SMS one day prior to the class.
